Is a Safety Contactor or Safety Relay required?. When deciding whether to use a contactor or a relay for a safety circuit there are some general rules to help make the decision easier. A contactor should be used when the current is 9A or more, up to 1000 V ac and can be used for 1 or 3 phase safety applications. A relay should be used when the current is 10A or less, up to 250 V ac and usually on single-phase safety applications.
